Hobart is surrounded by three regions perfect for wine production: The Derwent Valley, Coal River Valley, and Huon River Valley. These regions are home to 15 vineyards and make up an expansive wine route. Visitors can follow the route by car by following yellow signs with blue bunches of grapes. The area offers an array of wines, stunning views, and fantastic restaurants.
In the Coal Valley en route to Richmond, the Coal Valley Vineyard opens up like an oasis with rows upon rows of vines before a panorama of the valley and Barilla Bay. Producing a variety of wines, their Cabernet Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Riesling are award-winners. The cellar door is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. They offer sales, tastings, cheese platters, and light lunches. For other times, dinners, or special functions, call ahead for bookings.
