While the building here has had many uses, its first use was its most notorious-a crowded prison for women and their children. Explore its prison past and other uses through daily tours, archaeological digs, a memorial garden, and site shop. This site is now the home for the famous Island Produce Tasmania Fudge Factory.
Kangaroo Bluff was a battery built in 1880. Fitting into the curvature of the steep bluff, it is laden with underground passages and chambers. Equipped with an array of weaponry, including two guns weighing over 25 tons, and surrounded by a deep moat, this battery was impenetrable.
Port Arthur, an hour drive from Hobart, is Tasmania's convict capital. Trace the life of a convict at the Interpretation Gallery or trace the death of a convict on an Historic Ghost Tour. Port Arthur is the host to many other historic attractions and activities.
On the outside, it's a fine example of Georgian ecclesiastical architecture. On the inside, it is a disturbing edifice that contains underground passages, solitary confines, and an execution yard.
